It’s the food you eat and the beverages you drink. Some are super bad for herpes and you may not even know it.
I will give you a list here of what to eat and not to eat. Basically you want to eat foods high in the amino acid L-Lysine and low in the amino acid L-Arginine. The herpes virus feeds on Arginine and helps it to reproduce, so obviously you don’t want that. L-Lysine does the opposite and suppresses the virus, exactly what you do want!
Foods to avoid with a herpes outbreak are;
Nuts – peanuts and peanut butter are the worst for you with a 3 to 1 ratio of L-Arginine to L-Lysine. Other nuts to avoid, pine, walnut, brazil, hazelnut, macadamia, almonds, cashews, pecans and pistachios. Avoid them as much as possible until your symptoms are gone completely and then limit them.
Protein – beef, turkey, ham, liver, pork and lamb are very high in both amino acids, so limit them.
Vegetables – mature onion, rutabaga, squash, pumpkin seeds and brussels sprouts – yeah, not much loss here!
Fruit – coconuts, grapes, blueberries and blackberries *
Juice – orange, tangerine and grape juice */****
*Even though these are higher in Arginine than Lysine, the totals for both are low, plus fruits and veggies are good for you, so just eat in moderation. there are plenty of other fruits and vegetables.
****If you have oral canker sores, you definitely want to avoid these and other acidic foods as well, like tomatoes and tomato sauces (spaghetti), since they won’t feel good in your mouth, besides the internal problems with Arginine.
Other Foods to Avoid for Herpes Relief
Other food to avoid are sugary cereals, candy, cookies, cake, pastries, doughnuts and other baked sugary goods. These will reduce your L-Lysine levels and your immune system and you don’t want that.
The hardest of all to avoid, ok here it comes, chocolate and caffeine. Oh, I can hear you complaining from here. I know I love chocolate too and even though I usually drink tea most days, it is usually caffeinated. So no coffee, soda, caffeinated tea, green tea, etc. Well, if you drink a lot of caffeinated beverages, slow down gradually or you’ll probably get some headaches. After that, just try to only drink a little when you are dead tired, otherwise, try exercising and using B-12 to increase your energy.
These two items listed above will suppress your immune system, feed the virus and drain your adrenal glands. They should be avoided as much as possible. I know it’s hard, but would you rather have your herpes symptoms & outbreaks? It’s not forever, just until your symptoms are gone, and then in moderation.

Foods you can eat with a herpes outbreak are;
Fish – all are ok to eat. Some are higher than others in both, but all are higher in L-Lysine than Arginine. Try to not to eat the same one all the time, limit your tuna to 1-2 cans a week to avoid mercury and try not to eat Swordfish much as it is over fished. Also, shell fish has a 1 to 1 ratio, so try to avoid that for now as well.
Chicken – a little turkey and pork, but not too much.
Dairy – cheese, yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, cream cheese, marjoram, butter, sherbet, ice cream and whipped cream. Woo hoo! Eggs aren’t the best, so limit them.
Vegetable – most kinds, except those listed above
Fruit – most kind, except those listed above
Legumes and beans
Whole grain complex carbohydrates
See there are a lot of foods you can eat when you are having a herpes outbreak, so try to focus on that rather than what you can’t eat.
