If you could do only one thing to help your herpes symptoms, I would recommend taking lysine supplements.
Lysine for herpes is inexpensive, so it won’t set you back much at all. Check out this bottle of 200 capsules from Source Naturals for $10* currently (sometimes as low as $9):

or
L-Lysine 500mg Vegetarian 250 Tabs, NOW Foods
or

I prefer capsules to tablets because they are easier to swallow. Since you will need to take 2-6 per day, depending on the severity of your symptoms, they better be easy to swallow or you will not want to take them. Don’t make it difficult on yourself to save a dollar or two.
Taking lysine for herpes will help to suppress the herpes virus and counter the effects of l-arginine, another amino acid, which actually feeds the virus.
If you get any kind of oral canker sores, lysine supplements work wonders to help you not get them as much or as long. Woo Hoo! I hate canker sores, don’t you?
Of course you can and should control the food you eat as much as possible and that won’t cost you anything, although it can be a bit hard at times. It will have a dramatic affect on your herpes outbreaks. Seriously, if you did nothing else, this would really help. You can read more about the herpes diet on that page.
Even if you avoid foods that cause a herpes outbreak, you still could have some trouble with outbreaks if you are stressed, don’t sleep well, sick with a cold or have sex with someone who has herpes. I recommend you still take lysine supplements for herpes as it will help relieve your symptoms even more and you won’t have to stress quite as much about your food.
